This pair of late 19th/early 20th century brass Italian candleholders takes on the shape of bay laurel leaves (Latirus nobilis), an evergreen tree native to the Mediterranean region of Europe. The base of the candleholders consists of bay laurel leaves with flower buds, while the sockets took on a bellflower shape. The bay laurel was a popular motif in the classical Greek and Roman culture and depiction of art.
