French Sèvres Gilt-Bronze Mount 'Ormolu' Porcelain Centrepiece, circa 1771
The French Sèvres Porcelain Centrepiece
This French Sèvres Porcelain centrepiece from 1771 is set in gilt bronze mount 'ormolu'. The bowl itself displays one medallion on turquoise background with a pastoral scene of a couple in nature, the gentleman playing the guitar for the lady. This scene is inspired by the paintings of Jean-Antoine Watteau (1684-1721). This piece is signed with blue under-glaze Sèvres interlaced L, enclosing the date mark S for the year 1771. A mark inside the porcelain piece reads “Collection Jordan de Sury, Château Sur le Comtal”, which is an indication of its provenance. Sury-le-Comtal is a commune in the Loire region in central France.
